How to enable SEF in Joomla 1.6

Hi there, I have a Joomla site and when i put SEF on the site is not working anymore! I mean all the navigation pages and numbers are mist up! There is some tips to resolve this issue, because all my url’s are with some letters an sign that i believe Google don’t like them!
I have the same problem, anyway my site is working, but is give me the same bad URL like the SEF is not there or something! I put enable but still give me problems! I understand that you must be an advanced Joomla user to make the right configuration!
